Beyond documenting declines towards finding solutions

We don't need more data to convince us of the perilous position we're in - the planet's support systems are in decline and will continue to degrade unless we take substantive action.

Solutions exist, we just don't focus on them. A central tenet of Brock's writing and research is to stay solutions-focused - because we won't build the future that we can't imagine.

Welcome

to a curated collection of my writing pieces, where communication transcends mere awareness and aims to inspire change. Each piece is crafted with the intent to not only inform but also engage and motivate. Through a variety of topics and styles, my writing seeks to connect with readers on a deeper level, sparking thought and encouraging action.

Overfishing fix needs more than money

"It’s easy to stop overfishing: just stop fishers from taking too many fish from the sea. But of course the problem starts well before any boats hit the water. Turning the tide against overfishing requires addressing root causes and drivers such as unreliable or scarce data, too many boats in a fishery, inadequate monitoring of illegal activity, power asymmetries, and overall consumer demand needing to be tackled for real change to take place..."

Modern slavery rife in the ‘last frontier’ at sea

"Far out to sea, away from oversight, the big blue ocean is often referred to as the ‘last frontier’: a place of quiet desolation and — for criminal syndicates — legal impunity. Some fisheries have exploited this isolation to practice modern day slavery, subjecting migrant workers to horrible conditions and bringing in lucrative returns for their crimes.

This ‘out of sight, out of mind’ phenomenon..."

Our misperceptions of others' behaviour can be dangerous

Have you ever done something to fit in based on what was a false premise? We've all behaved in ways that we incorrectly thought others did (i.e., based on a false consensus). Normally this doesn't have significant repercussions. But when it comes to behaviours that effect the environment, the consequences can be far more serious than we think. Read the article to find out more, and what you can do to make sure you're not the black sheep.

How to stop poaching in marine reserves

Millions of people rely on fish and seafood from coral reefs. Some fishermen don’t care about illegally taking fish or other animals from no-take zones in marine parks. How hard can it be to change their minds? That is what Dr Brock Bergseth is trying to find out.

Fuel Tankers Help Highlight Illegal Fishing Hotspots

Bunker vessels are one of the most connected ships at sea; tracking them could pinpoint clusters of illegal fishing.

The majority of people who see poaching in marine parks say nothing

"What would you do if you saw someone breaking the law? Would you report the offender to the police? Confront them? Or would you do nothing?"

Behind the paper: Hunting for a solution

A concerned hunter's desire to preserve the world's natural resources leads to asking the hard questions about poaching in marine protected areas.
